Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (size 6 super bulky)
    • Color A: 1 ball
    • Color B: 1 ball
    • Color C: 1 ball
  • Crochet hook size 7 mm
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • One pair of black safety eyes (10 mm)
  • Black embroidery floss
  • Large-eyed blunt needle

Gauge: 10 sc and 10 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm)

Stitch Explanation

sc2tog: (Insert hook in next st and draw up a loop) twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook (1 st decreased)

Technique Explanations

Magic Ring: Wrap yarn around index finger. Insert hook into ring on finger, yarn over and draw up a loop. Carefully slip ring from finger and work the sts of Rnd 1 into the ring.

Invisible Join: After working last st of rnd, drop loop from hook. Insert hook from WS to RS in first st of rnd and pull up a loop. Ch 1. From RS, continue with next instruction.

Notes

  • Turtle is worked in 7 pieces: Head, Body, 2 Front Legs, 2 Back Legs, and Tail.
  • All pieces are worked in joined rounds. Join each round with an invisible join.
  • Body is worked in 3 sections: Top Shell, Under Shell, and Shell Border.
  • Details are embroidered on Shell and Head.

Head

With A, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in ring; invisible join.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; invisible join. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around; invisible join. (24 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (20 sc)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, *sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (16 sc)

Insert safety eyes between Rnds 4 and 5, about 10 sts apart. Begin stuffing.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Rnd 9: Ch 1, *sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (12 sc)

Rnds 10–12: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Finish stuffing.

With B, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Work 8 sc in ring; invisible join.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around; invisible join. (16 sc)

Rnd 16: Ch 1, *sc in 5 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (48 sc)

Rnd 17: Ch 1, *sc in 4 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (40 sc)

Begin stuffing.

Rnd 18: Ch 1, *sc in 3 sts, sc2tog; rep from * around; invisible join. (32 sc)

Rnd 3 (WS): Ch 1, TURN, sl st in each st around; invisible join. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Front Legs (make 2)

With A, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in ring; invisible join.

Rnds 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join. (8 sc in Rnd 4)

Rnds 5–7: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join. (14 sc in Rnd 7)

Rnds 8–11: Ch 1, 2 sc in next st, sc in 4 sts, (sc2tog) twice, sc in 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; invisible join.

Rnds 7–10: Ch 1, sc in each st around; invisible join.

Fasten off, leaving long tail. Do not stuff.

Tail

With A, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in ring; invisible join.

Rnds 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st; invisible join. (8 sc in Rnd 4)

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing. Do not stuff.

Finishing

  • Sew Head to neck opening of Body using tail.
  • Embroider curves above and below safety eyes using A.
  • Use black floss to embroider mouth and nostrils with straight stitches.
  • With C, embroider short straight lines on top of Head.
  • Sew Front Legs to sides between Rnds 14–16, about 5 sts from neck.
  • Sew Back Legs to sides between Rnds 14–16, about 6 sts behind Front Legs.
  • Sew Tail to back of Body, between Rnds 14–16, centered between Back Legs.
  • Embroider Shell detailing using C in small back stitches.
  • Weave in all ends.
